How old is this website?

We read the year from things with a known release date: the libraries the theme ships, the builder version, the services that have since shut down.

How the year is worked out

Every library has a release date. jQuery 1.12.4, Bootstrap 3.3.7 and Font Awesome 4.7 all shipped in 2016, so a site carrying the three was almost certainly built that year. Nobody upgrades a working theme backwards.

The rules we hold ourselves to

  • Two separately dated signals must agree, and the site must be three or more years old.
  • WordPress core files never date the build. They update with WordPress.
  • A rotating banner or old Internet Explorer code supports the story. It never sets the year.
  • Image sizes are measured, never estimated.

An old site is not a bad site. But the older the foundation, the more anything new costs to add.
